Stopping benzodiazepines suddenly is one of the few withdrawals that can put you in real medical danger, in the same category as alcohol. That surprises a lot of people. The other surprise is how long it lasts. Benzo withdrawal tends to run on a longer timeline than most expect, with symptoms that can come and go for weeks. For these reasons we do not stop the medication abruptly. We reduce the dose gradually through a supervised taper, adjusting the pace as your body responds.
